Why don't the Sun Kings try to look
more like the Beatles?
In a lot of ways, The Beatles as a rock group went
beyond being mere musicians putting out great music. Their immense popularity
translated into an influence on 1960s popular culture, styles and fashions.
Part of the reason so many people liked the group was because of the way
they looked and the way they defined much of the sixties -- from
the mop tops of 1963, through the psychedelic fashions in 1967 and the
matured men near the end of the decade.
It makes sense then that many bands who try to recreate the Beatles tight
harmonies, innovative musicianship and studio work, also recreate the
look of the band. They use wigs, fake mustaches, suits, colorful satin
costumes and granny glasses to present the illusion that the Beatles are
indeed playing live in front of your eyes.
The Sun Kings don't. When you see us on stage, we're just five normal
looking guys who don't try to look like anyone else.
There are some obvious problems with us attempting to look the part. We're
five members, the Beatles were four. As individuals, we simply don't
look like the Fab 4 and to try would distract from our goal of playing
great music. We wouldn't be fooling anyone.
While the Beatles' impact on popular culture may be the subject of PHD
dissertations, endless news reports and trivia, it's still the music first
and foremost that made the band what it was.
As a band that recreates their sound, we try to take the same approach.
If the sounds you hear don’t match what you’re seeing, turn
off your mind, relax, float down stream, and enjoy the music.
