Sunday December 28, 2003
It has been a wonderful closing to 2003 for us, playing for many dear
friends at 3 of our favorite venues. It felt like home starting at the
King's Head last weekend, complete with a special Christmas song from
Drew and very special audience participation. Thank you Yokos and choir!
Old home week continued at the Grant & Green, where the day after
Christmas didn't deter the faithful from lending their support, nor others
from vigorously rehearsing for New Years Eve. We might add a wish for
our favorite Grant & Greener -- Get well soon Joanna, we missed you
this time! Finally last night at Croll's, a homecoming for some of our
earliest and dearest fans. Inside Croll's was an island of warmth in
a sea of winter. You are the best, Alameda! Next time back, we promise
you more dance floor space. We wrap up our year this NYE at First Night
in downtown Martinez, and then the band is taking a break in January.
We'll return to action Saturday January 31 back at the King's Head, and
look forward to seeing you there. We wish you the happiest of holidays,
and thank you for helping to make 2003 our best year so far. See you
soon!
Thursday December 18, 2003
Just a quick, drive-by blogging to let you know that we'll be making
our final South Bay appearance of the year this Saturday at the King's
Head in Campbell. Also, our previously scheduled show for December 28
at the Cannery has been postponed, as they are building a new stage in
the courtyard and it won't be finished by then. We've also added one
more show in Alameda, Saturday Dec. 27 at Croll's in Alameda. Tickets
for this show are $5 and available at Croll's or by
emailing us. Hope all your holidays are treating you well, and we
look forward to seeing you at least once more this year. All the best
from Drew, Michael, Raul, Alan and Tony.
Monday December 8, 2003
It was a great couple of shows in San Francisco last Thursday and Friday,
with lots of friends both old and new in attendance. We made our first
appearance at StudioZ along with 'Exile on Haight St.', a band that covered
the similar named Stones classic album, adding a psychedelic twist. Thanks
to all of you who stayed up late on a school night to catch us (and thank
you Debbie, for a lovely introduction). Last Friday we had a long overdue
return to Ireland's 32, and saw lots of familiar faces there too. Thanks
for a grand time! We'll be back in San Francisco again after Christmas,
and we've got one more public appearance before then at the King's Head
in Campbell on Dec. 20. We look forward to meeting you there.
Finally, we cannot let the day pass without remembering that Monday
night 23 years ago today, when the genius that was John Lennon was taken
from us forever by a nowhere man with a gun. It still gives each of us
chills to think how cruelly senseless this world can sometimes be. We've
put up some more pictures on our memorial site
to John, and hope you will take a few moments today to remember him,
his family and the enormous contribution he made during his all too brief
stay here. We miss him still.
Friday November 28, 2003
And a slighty belated Happy Thanksgiving to you all. We're wrapping
up our November by battling our own little outbreak of the dreaded influenza.
First to fall was Tony who missed last Friday's show at Grant & Green.
Fortunately for us, our original drummer Scott Rabino was on hand to
fill in and the show went on. It was just like old times. Next into sick
bay went Drew, who thanks to the healing power of chicken soup and turkey
dinners, will be a vertical man for the show tomorrow. Next Thursday,
a fully recovered band will be playing a double bill with Exile on Haight
St. at StudioZ in SF, followed the next night by a long delayed reappearance
at Ireland's 32, also in SF. Check our calendar for details. We go on
holiday in January, so we hope to see you at least one more time in 2003.
Sunday November 9, 2003
Happy Birthday, Alan!!
And thanks to all of you who made last Friday's show at the Grant & Green
an extra special event. The band had a fantastic time, debuting some
new songs and revisiting old ones that hadn't been heard for quite awhile.
We took the liberty of dedicating 'Birthday' to Alan and Michael, 'USSR'
went out to Tina from Boston, and Cathi M. fell in love. Only one more
public show remains this month, and we'll see you there--back at the
Grant & Green on Friday, Nov. 21. We'll look for you then!
Monday November 3, 2003
Happy Birthday, Michael!!
We have a lighter November schedule than usual, as we opt for more rehearsal
time to learn some new songs. As a result, you'll likely hear something
new at each of our November shows, even if you've seen us many times
before. We wrapped our long summer season at the Cannery last Saturday
afternoon with our final show of the year there, we'll be back again
once released from the chill embrace of winter. The 2 chances left to
see us this month are both at the Grant & Green in North Beach. Fridays
Nov. 7 and Nov. 21. Showtimes are 9:30 PM and no cover. We'll be a little
more visible (and a lot more rehearsed) come December, but we hope to
see you before then. We're also looking for ways (besides the obvious)
to celebrate the release of "Let it Be - Naked". Any ideas?
Monday October 13, 2003
Last weekend we got a small taste of what the Beatles schedule was like
from 1963-1966. Playing 4 shows within a 50 hour time span, we gained
a deeper appreciation of the sheer endurance those lads possessed all
those years ago. Last Friday's show at Grant & Green was a great
time as always, thanks in no small part to the support of the Millbrae
and Leapfrog contingents. Saturday afternoon found us at the Cannery
in the midst of the Fleet Week festivities, and with the Blue Angels
as an opening act, how could you lose? We had a wonderful group on hand
to sing along with the Beatle's best. Sunday afternoon we made an appearance
out in the delta at the Brentwood Fair before dashing pell mell back
to San Francisco for our big show with the Unauthorized Rolling Stones.
We had a fab time hanging out with them and we can only hope that folks
enjoyed our set as much as we enjoyed theirs. We're back at the Cannery
this Saturday Oct. 18, and there are spooky rumours afloat of a Halloween
show, so stay tuned.
Friday September 26, 2003
Just a quick note to catch up, as we've got a busy weekend ahead. Grant & Green,
the King's Head and the Cannery in quick succession. Just announced is
a show on Sunday October 12 at Broadway Studios in San Francisco. We
kick off a double billing of the Sun Kings and the Unauthorized Rolling
Stones at 7:30 PM. We've played the same stage a day apart, we've played
next door to each other in North Beach, but this will be our first show
together. It's also a birthday celebration for URS's own Rudy Colombini
(Mick) which serves to make the occasion even more enticing. Additional
details to follow. See you tonight, or tomorrow--or Sunday.
Wednesday September 10, 2003
Happy Birthday Raul!!
Who is hitting a milestone today. It's one of the big ones between 21
and 65, he'll let you guess which one. You can send birthday wishes or
e-cards to Raul here. Or
you could come out to the Vallejo Blues Festival this Saturday to wish
him the best. Either way it will be much appreciated. Today also marks
year 2 of our 'What's New' section, we're glad you're still reading it.
Response to the web site's new look has been overwhelmingly positive
and we hope it was worth the wait. Thanks for your continued support
and we look forward to seeing you at a show soon!
Saturday September 6, 2003
It's finally here, our long promised -- oft delayed new web site. We
hope you enjoy it, and we plan to keep adding variety based on your suggestions,
so keep 'em coming. We also hope you're an early riser today, because
we'll be out waking up the neighbors at 11 AM this morning at the Peanut
Butter Jam Festival on Webster St. in Alameda. Next Saturday we'll be
showing a bluer side of the Beatles at the Vallejo Blues and Heritage
Festival at 5 PM. Our mailing list sign-up page has re-appeared, so please
take advantage and sign up for the latest on our upcoming shows. The
outdoor season continues, so come out to soak up the end of summer with
us and we'll see you soon.
Monday September 1, 2003
Our BIG news is the announcement that after 5 months, we have found
a permanent drummer. Please join us in welcoming Tony Pintacura as
the newest member of the Sun Kings. Tony has a diverse musical pedigree
that goes as far back as Beatlemania itself. He swings like Ringo, knows
the Beatles music intimately and is a great guy to hang out with as well.
He has played a few shows with us already, and will be on board for keeps
starting with our Sept. 21 Cannery appearance. Come out and give him
a cheer!
We also wish to thank all the fine drummers that auditioned for the
chair and for those among them who rose to the occasion and played shows
with us as we searched for a permanent member. Our deepest thanks to Rich
Snider, Jim Cahill, John Eckstein and especially David
George, our Alameda Ringo ringer. They helped the band out immensely
and their efforts are well appreciated.
We'll be appearing at the Alameda PBJ festival this Saturday from 11
AM - 12:15 PM. Our newly designed web site will also go live this Saturday.
Check 'em both out.
Monday August 11, 2003
There's just something about the great outdoors. Thanks to the fine
folks in Pleasant Hill for a wonderful early evening of music yesterday,
especially to those of you who had seen us in Concord some days before
and made it out for one more visit. You guys know how to have some fun!
The kids danced right along with the 'older kids' and the warmth of the
audience matched a picture perfect day. As we finished up, a full moon
began to rise over Mt. Diablo, and Venus and Mars were alright tonight
-- especially Mars. Back to more earthly matters, this Friday, August
15 marks our first indoor appearance in 10 weeks, at the Grant & Green
in North Beach. Show time is 9:30, but come early because unlike the
outdoors, G&G has walls and fills up fast. We'll see you there!
Friday August 8, 2003
It has been a great week of outdoor shows for us. The Music and Market
Series concert in Concord was some fabulous fun. An afternoon and early
evening of sprinkles only made it feel more like Woodstock. The audience
was amazing, stayed until the last note of 'A Day in the Life', and a
splendid time was had by all. The weekend brought our return engagement
to the Alameda Art & Wine Fair. Another fine couple of shows, in
a hometown that has always made us feel so very welcome. We saw most
all of our local friends, who came out at 10 AM to give us a shout and
show their support. Thanks to you all, and let's do it again next year!
We're not finished with those outdoor shows yet. This Sunday August 10,
finds us in Pleasant Hill for 'Sunset by the Lake'. A few more festivals
are booked in September, check the calendar page for details. And finally,
many of you might have noticed the web site was down for part of this
week. Never a good thing, but the problem was found, solved and we're
told it should stay that way. See you in the sun this Sunday!
Wednesday July 30, 2003
A big thank you to all the folks who showed up last Sunday at the Cannery
to let us know you've been waiting awhile for a Sun Kings show. We're
gearing up for our August in the outdoors, which started last Sunday.
Tomorrow we'll be in Concord for the Music and Market Series concert
at Todos Santo Plaza from 6 PM - 7:30 PM. This Saturday and Sunday, we're
back at the Alameda Art & Wine Fair. We had a great time there last
year and are looking forward to a fun filled hometown weekend. Shows
are from noon - 2 PM on Saturday, and 10 AM - noon on Sunday. More shows
to follow, check our calendar for details. And we promise that August
will bring our long awaited, long delayed new look for the web site.
See you soon!
Monday July 21, 2003
Hi, it's us. We're back. Sometimes one must go through a crisis to find
out just how tight one's band remains. And did we ever. The substitute
drummer we had booked to play our July and August shows informed us he
would be unable to honor his commitments. Unfortunately, he waited until
the day after Drew had left for Europe to surprise us with that little
announcement. Our drummer friend David George is in the midst of his
own summer touring, and couldn't help (much as he wished to) with our
predicament. Drew arrived back in the USA on Friday and our weekend was
spent with the band hip-deep in drummer auditions. Due to time constraints,
we were forced to cancel 2 shows, including this Friday's previously
scheduled appearance at Grant & Green. We apologize for the bailout,
but good news is on the way. We will be appearing again starting next
week, and have emerged from the crisis with our humor and dedication
intact. We also found that the spirit of Ringo still burns bright in
a good number of Bay Area drummers, and that too is heartening. So, like
a Phoenix rising from the asses (not a typo) we'll be hitting the streets
again beginning Sunday July 27 at the Cannery in SF. We've got some pounding
percussion behind us again, and are as eager to play as we have ever
been. If you're eager to hear us again, then come on out to a show. It'll
be a match made in heaven. See you then!
Sunday June 8, 2003
It's been a busy couple of weeks for us, with shows aplenty and a web
host transfer making it more difficult than usual getting the word out,
but that didn't stop a lot of you. From Grant & Green to Croll's,
the Cannery, the Last Day and the King's Head it was gratifying to see
so many of you out to support the band. We're now taking a little summer
vacation of our own. Drew is off to the Czech Republic for his annual
primal scream solo tour, and the Grant & Green show scheduled for
6/20 is postponed until 7/25 as a result. In the interim we'll be making
some overhauls to the web site and the set list. When we pick it up in
late July we have a series of outdoor shows to take full advantage of
the extra daylight. If nothing else, you can come out just to watch our
studio tans turn from pasty to pink. But we'll have some new songs to
entice you as well as some new venues coming up. Have a great midsummer--and
stay tuned!
Wednesday May 14, 2003
We had a great time last Sunday out in the air and sunshine of the Cannery
in SF, out around Fisherman's Wharf. Between a last minute call to fill
for a cancellation, and some flaky internet service as of late (due to
change soon) we didn't get the word out in our usual timely fashion.
However a great time was said to be had by all in attendance, along with
their attendant mothers enjoying the Mother's Day festivities. More appearances
at the Cannery are in the works and we promise more notice for the next
one. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Monday May 5, 2003
Has it really been over a month since we've updated this thing? Time
flies when we're busy. We came back at the end of April at Grant & Green,
which was a great show with an enthusiastic crowd and David George in
the drum chair for the first time. We have a couple of private parties
over the next couple of weeks and our next public show is at Ireland's
32 on Friday May 23. The next week will be a trans-bay extravaganza,
with a show Friday night May 30 at Grant & Green in North Beach,
followed by a Saturday show at Croll's 1883 in Alameda. We kick off June
with a return to the Last Day Saloon on Thursday June 5 and our first
appearance in the South Bay at the King's Head in Campbell Friday June
6. Keep an eye on the calendar for some new shows. More surprises are
in the works including a design overhaul to this site. The new look should
be unveiled in early June. See you soon!
Monday March 31, 2003
A message from Scott Rabino
Dear Sun Kings Fans,
Anyone who was at the Grant & Green on Saturday March 22, saw the
last show that I will be performing as a regular member of the Sun Kings.
Starting next month, I'll be working with the Tommy Castro Band. Despite
my love of the Beatles' music, I am excited to return to my musical roots.
Leaving the Sun Kings isn't easy for me. We created a powerful, very
respectable rock n roll band; a band that I'm proud of. The past two
years with the Sun Kings have been a marvelous period of musical growth
for me, and I am deeply indebted to all the guys in the band. I'm happy
to say that my replacement is one of the best drummers I know. David
will do a great job ... Ringo's music couldn't be in better hands.
Thanks, everybody.
-- Scott
And there you have it. Scott's talents have been snapped up, but we
are not left high and dry. We would like to introduce David George, drummer
extrordinaire, fellow Alameda resident and long-time Sun Kings fan. He
is an 11 year veteran of national recording act 'Malo' and is overjoyed
to be filling in for us through the spring and early summer (just as
we are happy to have him). We wish Scott the best of luck and are glad
that his golden opportunity has finally come a' knocking, even if it
was not with us. We'll be woodshedding on all those Beatle songs over
the next month (just like old times), and re-debuting at Grant & Green
on Friday April 25. See you there!
Saturday March 15, 2003
Happy Birthday, Scott!!
Scott and the rest of the Sun Kings invite you to celebrate both Scott's
birthday and the wearin' of the green on St. Paddy's day at Croll's.
The fun starts at 9 PM. This Saturday March 22, it'll be Mother Earth's
turn for wearin' the green, as we party with our old friend the vernal
equinox (now THERE'S a reason to celebrate) with a show at --where else--Grant & GREEN.
Show time is 9:30 PM with no cover. Drew jets to NYC for the remainder
of March and part of April to take care of some family business, so our
schedule is a little light at the start of spring. Fear not, because
things are blooming again in May as we begin adding several new bookings
around the bay area. Keep an eye on our calendar, and we'll see you on
St. Patrick's Day.
Thursday March 6, 2003
March is here already, and with it a few more Sun Kings shows. We had
a great audience at the Last Day Saloon on Thursday last, and a fab time
was had by all. Tomorrow night March 7, we'll be at the Grant & Green
in friendly ol' North Beach, as well as Saturday March 22. Start time
9:30 PM for both shows. No cover at either. On St. Patrick's Day, we'll
be wearing the green down at Croll's 1883 in Alameda. The show starts
at 9 PM, and tickets are available for $10 at Croll's (1400 Webster St.
Alameda 510.748.6075) Look for some new venues to crop up later in the
spring, as we stretch our wings around the bay a little more.
Monday February 17, 2003
Thanks to our many friends in and around Alameda who helped make our
Valentine's evening show at Croll's a sellout event. We love those hometown
crowds! The band has also been working on some new material that will
be debuted at our next show, which is this Friday at Livermore's own
UK Cafe. So come on out to see if we have learned the song that YOU have
been wanting us to play for months. Next week has one more SF show to
round out the month at the Last Day Saloon on Thursday Feb 27. Hope to
see you there.
Wednesday February 5, 2003
Thanks to the folks who came down to last months' shows at the Last
Day Saloon, Pier 23 and Tongue & Groove and said nice things about
the performance. In February we'll be appearing here and there in SF,
Alameda and Livermore. Celebrate the 39th anniversary of the Beatles
first arrival in America this Friday with us at Ireland's 32. Next Friday,
we'll be playing a Valentine's Day show at Croll's 1883 in Alameda. Admission
is $10 and tickets are available at Croll's (1400 Webster St. Alameda
510.748.6075) or by email.
Friday Feb. 21, we'll be back at the UK Cafe in Livermore, and Thursday
Feb. 27 finds us back at the Last Day Saloon. Check our calendar for
more details. We look forward to seeing you at some of these shows.
Sunday January 19, 2003
It's good to be back. Last night's well attended show at Grant & Green
was a great welcome to 2003 for us, and we thank the many new friends
who signed up for our mailing list, thronged the dance floor and generally
made it a night to remember. Just added to this week's calendar is a
Thursday show, Jan. 23, at the Last Day Saloon in SF. The Last Day has
an amazing sound system, a long history of great musical acts, and a
spacious dance floor. We hope you'll join us there. The next night, Friday
Jan. 24, we'll be at Pier 23 for its grand re-opening, followed next
Thursday Jan. 30 by our first show at the Tongue and Groove. Check our
show listings calendar for show times and details, and we'll see you
in the city this month.
Wednesday January 8, 2003
Just dropping in to wish everyone that wasn't at last week's show a belated
Happy New Year. For those that were, you helped make it a great evening.
We're in the midst of a post year-end holiday, and will be back in the
saddle next weekend at Grant & Green on Saturday Jan. 18. Look for
more activity on our calendar after that. Thursday Jan 30 will mark our
first appearance at the Tongue and Groove in SF, and more shows are in
the works. See you soon!
Tuesday December 24, 2002
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all from Drew, Michael,
Raul, Scott and Alan. Thank you for helping to make 2002 a wonderful
year for the Sun Kings. May your own Christmas star shine brightly
within you every day of the year.
Sunday December 15, 2002
Thank you Sun Kings friends and fans for an amazing weekend. Friday's
show at Grant & Green was so well attended you would have never
known a storm had pulverized the area just hours before. Friends old
and new abounded, and the dance floor had an attraction all its own.
The kicker was on Saturday night at the holiday party with most all
of our Alameda friends. Your presence meant so much to us, and your
appreciation for the show was heartfelt and warm. You are really the
best! Over the next couple of weeks we wind up our year with one more
Alameda show this Wednesday, and 2 more SF shows on Dec. 21 & 27.
Check the calendar for details. We wish the happiest of holidays to
you this season and hope you'll find time to join us once more this
year.
Friday November 29, 2002
It has been a visible week for Beatles memories. First Paul McCartney
on TV earlier this week showcasing his record breaking tour, and tonight
joining with Ringo in London for a tribute concert honoring George
Harrison on the first anniversary of his death. These little reminders
further energize us to share this timeless music with as many people
as possible. Tomorrow night we'll be at a new venue, the Lost and Found
in North Beach, starting at 9:30 PM. We'll have a special section of
the show for our own George tribute, to whom we owe so much. We hope
you'll join us there. It'll be one from the heart.
Monday November 18, 2002
A rollicking good time was had by all last Friday at Pier 23, thanks
to a little help from our friends old and new. Look for us to return
there around late December. On the down side, this Saturday's show
at McGee's has been cancelled. Their anniversary party will still go
on, but they expect so many people they have no room left to put the
band, and they fear that an unfriendly visit from the fire marshall
could really put a damper on the festivities. Sooo, it's on to the
Lost & Found Saloon on Sat. Nov 30. This Wednesday will be the
last of our informal John Patrick's appearances for this month, and
we hope you'll come out and informalize with us. See you soon!
Saturday November 9, 2002
Happy Birthday, Alan!!
Alan extends a personal invitation to everyone to come out to Pat
O'Shea's at 9:30 this evening. It's our first show there and as an
added attraction you can watch Alan turn another year older before
your very eyes. Michael will accept late birthday wishes, and the whole
band will be playing Beatles music with a vengeance; almost as if the
Rolling Stones were appearing across town, and it was some sort of
contest to be the bigger draw. Come to think of it, the Stones ARE
playing across town. Hmmm, they seem to have had a lot of advance press
as well. Bigger venue too. OK then...for 1/30th the price of a Stones
ticket, come on out and hoist one to the memory of the REAL greatest
rock n' roll band, the Beatles. We'll save a spot on the dance floor
for you.
Sunday November 3, 2002
Happy Birthday, Michael!!
In a world where the only constant is change, our 11/16 McGee's show
has been moved back a week to Sat. Nov 23, to coincide with McGee's
anniversary party. Show time remains 10 PM, but come early, there is
no cover charge that evening, and the place will be packed. San Francisco
fans will find us back for a repeat performance at Pier 23 in SF on
Friday Nov. 15, and our first show at SF's Lost and Found Saloon on
Fri. Nov 30. In far off January 2003, we'll be debuting at The Tongue & Groove
in SF on Thur. 1/30. More November shows will be added this week, so
check our calendar and stay tuned for details.
Wednesday October 23, 2002
We had a great time last Friday with our friends at Grant & Green,
a good number of Alameda associates and some enthusiastic new faces.
Let's do it again in the same neighborhood next week. We'll be at the
Royale, just down the block on Grant Ave. Wednesday, October 30. Show
starts at 10. Tonight we'll be doing our Wednesday informal at John
Patrick's in Alameda. Last Wednesday was wonderfully wild. We tried
out a few new songs, Crystal showed the love, and the dancing was nonstop
for the last hour. Come see for yourself tonight. This Friday night,
we'll break in the UK Cafe in Livermore. Look for more new venues and
shows in November.
Thursday October 10, 2002
A little bit of shifting for our October calendar. We've heard from
not a few of our Alameda friends bemoaning the lack of hometown shows
this month. Presto Change-o! We've moved our start date at San Francisco's
Royale from October 16 to October 30. Wednesdays October 16 and 23,
we'll be at John Patrick's in Alameda. And still speaking of shifting,
our Englander show for Friday October 25 has been cancelled. Apparently
they've been having some problems with noise and neighbors and must
curtail their live music offerings for the immediate future. Soooo,
we swapped one East Bay English pub show for another that's just a
little, er...Easter. Any Brit in a storm we say, and October 25 now
finds us at the UK Cafe in Livermore. Hopefully, that should sort it
out for this month. Any questions?
Tuesday October 1, 2002
Its time to play some Beatles again! We open up October tomorrow night
at the Red Devil Lounge. The show starts at 10 PM. Come on out as we
kick off a new season playing our favorite music. We have several shows
in October, new songs in the works and lungs to clear. After so much
time way, the band is excited to be playing again, and hopefully it
shows. Offstage, we've all had a busy month apart. Scott's been teaching,
Michael's been learning. Drew has been traveling, Alan is writing and
Raul just keeps moving. It all comes together again starting tomorrow.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Tuesday September 10, 2002
Happy Birthday, Raul!!
Today marks the one year anniversary of our 'What's New?' page, which
is nearly as old as the site itself. Who woulda thunk it? We've seen
a lot happen over the last year musically, locally and globally. We
occasionally got out of Alameda to play in the big city and beyond,
and have met a host of wonderful friends and supporters over the year.
We hear that many of you actually read this section, and we're most
grateful that you care. The band has been a labor of love for us these
past couple of years, but its so much more fun when we can share the
love of this great music with you. Your response has been fab. During
our downtime, we've put up some new and updated audio on our Audio
Clips page. We'll be back in October, and are planning no more
long breaks for the remainder of the year, so there should be plenty
of opportunities to catch a show this fall and winter. We'll be looking
for you!
Friday September 6, 2002
The band may be taking a little break, but this site continues to
evolve. Last month we moved to a new web hosting service so we could
implement some of your many fab suggestions. By popular demand, our
show listings page now features a perpetual
calendar for those wishing to see beyond the current month. Another
site issue was brought to our attention last month, when someone ineptly
and unsuccessfully tried to spread a virus to our mailing list. The
result is a more secure mailing list form. You mean you haven't
signed up yet? We've even put a couple of recent pictures up on
our Meet the Band page. Also, keep an ear open for updated and new
audio clips soon. Our October dates are filling up fast and we've got
some new venues that we want to share with you. The Red Devil Lounge
in SF welcomes us on Wed. October 2, and Livermore's UK Cafe has us
there on Friday October 5. There are also return engagements at the
Grant & Green and the Englander. Come on out to share in the fun.
Sunday August 25, 2002
By popular demand, the private party we had booked for this Saturday,
August 31 is now a public party, and of course you're invited. We'll
be playing at Scobie's (2431 Central Ave) in Alameda beginning at 9
PM. We've also got an outdoor early evening appearance this Thursday,
August 29 outside the Englander (101 Parrott St.) in San Leandro. After
this week we're off for September, then coming back big in October
with a show at the Red Devil Lounge (1695 Polk St. & Clay, SF)
on Wednesday October 2. Its going to be incendiary, and we look forward
to seeing everyone there.
Monday August 19, 2002
It was another fine week of San Francisco shows the last couple of
Fridays. We had Barry hit #600 to kick off our 8/9 show at Grant & Green,
and they were dancing all night last Friday at Ireland's 32. Raul and
Alan both obtained new instruments last week, and do they ever sound
fab! We're finally adding some more songs to our set list. Our web
site is also undergoing changes as we work to add more of the content
you've been asking for. Keep an eye open. Oh yeah, and Drew is off
to Europe for 3 weeks next month. Come down to John Patrick's this
Wednesday and the Englander next Thursday to help see him off. Stay
tuned for word on late September and October shows coming soon.
Thursday August 8, 2002
Just a little note to let you know we'll be appearing Wednesdays this
month at John Patrick's (1813 Park St.) in Alameda from 9 PM till midnight.
We'll be trying out some new material and keeping it casual. Be advised
that the interior of JP's is not for the faint of heart, but the people
there are nice and on Wednesdays the music is too. Tomorrow we return
to the Grant & Green in North Beach at 9:30 PM. We'll be looking
for you there.
Monday August 5, 2002
It was just like the 4th of July all over again, except this time
without the motion sickness. Off of the float, onto a stationary stage
and once again, the Alameda streets were warm, welcoming and wonderful.
Thanks to all of you who who attended one or both days and all your
kind comments on the band. Despite the occasionally petulant amplifier
and the weather's best efforts to untune the guitars, it was a weekend
to remember for us. We had an unusually high number of family members
and friends in attendance. We had T shirts to sell, and mailing lists
to sign, and both were enthusiastically received. The remainder of
our shows this month are in SF and the East Bay, but we're working
on getting another show or two within the city limits. We'll keep you
posted. Thanks again, Alameda. You're the best!
Friday July 19, 2002
The Sun Kings are pleased to announce the acquisition of our newest
member, Alan Lopez, on bass and vocals. We have been busy over the
past month, albeit offstage. Jim Canzoneri left the band in June, and
we would like to thank him for his year with us, and wish him all the
best in his new musical pursuits. Alan was selected after several weeks
of auditions, and debuted with the band at the 4th of July parade,
an auspicious beginning. Alan's a true Beatlephile, who adds a fourth
singing voice to the mix, and also knows his way around a bass. You
can read more about Alan on our Meet the Sun Kings page, if you're
so inclined. We'd also like to herald the return of the Sun Kings with
some August shows, starting with our early morning appearance on 107.7
FM, "The Bone Morning Show" at the crack of dawn on Friday
Aug. 2. Then there's the Alameda Art & Wine Fair on the weekend
of the 3rd & 4th, followed by the Grant & Green on Friday 8/9,
and Ireland's 32 on Friday 8/16, both in San Francisco. More shows
and details on the calendar in August. We'll see you soon, and greatly
appreciate your patience and continuing support.
Wednesday July 10, 2002
Happy Birthday, Drew!!
Word of mouth is a wonderful thing. Thanks for the many band inquiries,
web site hits and mailing list signups since our July 4 parade appearance.
We have several private shows this month, and we'll be out in force
at more public venues in August and beyond. Watch this space for announcements
to that effect, and thanks again for proving that Beatles music NEVER
goes out of style.
Thursday July 4, 2002
Alameda, you sure know how to make a hometown band feel welcome! Riding
in today's 4th of July parade was a thrilling experience, and we saw
a great many friends along the way. The mood was festive, smiles were
in abundance and even the sun cooperated. We appreciate the great response
to the band's appearance (and would like to thank the Raiderettes for
opening the show for us). We'll be back on the streets in Alameda next
month, playing at the Park St. Art and Wine Fair August 3-4. Thank
you everybody, for a fabulous day.
Monday June 17, 2002
A big 'Thank You' to all our friends who came out in force to our
Grant & Green show last Friday. It was great to see you and your
presence was greatly appreciated. The high point of the night was the
birthday celebration for two of our audience. After great preparation
and fanfare (psst...don't start 'Birthday' until the candles are lit!!),
the cake was delivered -- directly to the dance floor, face down before
a single slice could be cut. Now THAT's rock 'n roll. And though the
party may have been without cake, it was not without fun. Now it's
back to our busy June outside the band. Keep an eye on our calendar,
and we'll be back before you know it.
Wednesday June 12, 2002
Just dropping in to say hello, and plug our only public appearance
this month -- this Friday at the Grant & Green in North Beach.
The band is chomping at the bit to play live, and it should be a fab
show! We'll see you there.
Tuesday May 28, 2002
Happy Birthday, Jim!!
Although our schedule is a bit light next month (by our choice) we
do have a show on Fri. June 14, at Grant & Green in North Beach.
This will be one of our very few June public shows, and we hope to
see many of our friends there. There'll be a big well of pent up music
in us by then, so come on out to see the dam burst. A 'great flood'
of Beatles music is forecast for that evening and you won't even need
rain boots--or Beatle boots for that matter. No really, it'll be fun.
Or as a Beatle once remarked, a splendid time is guaranteed for all!
Tuesday May 21, 2002
Sun Kings fans are the greatest! Thanks to our friends old and new
that helped make last weekend's shows at the Englander and Ireland's
32 a smashing success. Tips abounded both nights, although in different
forms. Though we truly appreciate all your support and affection, aside
from a few private shows we'll be taking some time away from the band
over the next month. Life is a juggling act, and if you can't hold
all your balls, they get broken. We will be playing a show or two in
the City in early June. Please stay tuned.
Saturday May 11, 2002
Once again we had a cancellation due to illness last night, and with
no time to get it out over the web. Our apologies to any and all who
came out to Grant & Green expecting the Sun Kings and finding us
not there. Fortunately, the fever has broken and we are collectively
well enough to carry on tonight at McGee's. Hope to see you there.
Sunday April 14, 2002
Thanks to those of you who made it out to Thursday's show at the Curve
on such short notice. We'll try and get you more advance warning (as
well as closer proximity to a ball game) next time out. Friday at Grant & Green
was another great time with our friends in North Beach. Most of the
shows this month are private parties, but I think we can let slip that
4/20's party will be taking place at McGee's in Alameda, which will
be open to the public. And no cover charge either!
Sunday April 7, 2002
Some short notice for a show booked this Thursday evening at The Curve
in San Francisco, on Third St. at Townsend in SF, across the street
from Pac Bell Park. We'll be playing from 6:30 - 9 PM. The Giants play
an afternoon game at the park, so if you're a fan of the Giants and
Beatles music, this could be your golden opportunity for an afternoon
of baseball plus dinner (and a show) with the Sun Kings. Our May calendar
is filling up with return engagements at Grant & Green (5/10),
McGee's (5/11), the Englander (5/17) and Ireland's 32 (5/18). Looking
further into summer, we'll be appearing at Alameda's Park St. Art & Wine
Fair the weekend of August 3 - 4. Still waiting for word on possible
shows later in April, and we'll keep you posted. We've also been learning
some additional songs to surprise you with at the next show. See you
soon!
Tuesday March 19, 2002
Our sincere apologies to those that came out to Ireland's 32 last
Saturday only to find no Sun Kings. One of our own was stricken with
the flu and unable to perform. We regret the inconvenience to you and
the club, and can now report that with our boy winning the battle against
the Flu Meanies, we will be in shape to play this Friday's show at
the Englander. We have an extra week's worth of Beatles songs pent
up inside us, so it will be quite the blowout. We look forward to seeing
you there.
Friday March 15, 2002
Happy Birthday, Scott!!
Sunday March 10, 2002
Another fine trans-bay weekend for the band at Grant & Green on
Friday, debuting a few added numbers and rocking out in North Beach.
Saturday was another hometown show at McGee's and it was gratifying
seeing so many of our friends back yet again. You're the best! Next
Saturday finds us back in San Francisco at Ireland's 32 where we'll
be playing our St. Patrick's Eve show on the 16th. Get an early start
on St. Paddy's day and help us usher it in with some well chosen Beatles
music. New venues are also in the works this spring and we'll let you
know here. You can also sign up to our mailing list and be among the
very first to know. Anyone planning to see Sir Paul? Mr. McCartney
appears close to (our) home when he comes to the Oakland Arena on April
1. We're happy to plug his show and are confident he'll return the
favor, tickets go on sale today. And while we're on the subject, our
thanks to Paul, for writing so much of the great material we have to
work with. For us, performing this music is a labor of love that we
love sharing with all of you.
Tuesday February 26, 2002
Was a bit of a blue Monday yesterday realizing that this was the first
time in our lives that George Harrison's birthday rolled around without
George himself around to celebrate it. He is missed. We also let a
week go by without mentioning the great turnout the weekend before
at Grant & Green and McGee's. Saturdays show at McGee's saw the
debut of our new PA system and nobody said they couldn't hear the vocals
this time. It also yielded a couple more audio clips that we've added
to our page. We're taking these couple of weeks before the March shows
to learn a few new songs and tweak our sound system a little more.
Thanks to all the fans who have discovered and signed up for our mailing
list, you'll get the inside info on March, which brings return engagements
at Ireland's 32, The Englander, Grant & Green and McGee's. Stay
tuned for details.
Monday February 11, 2002
Thanks to all our friends who came out to the Ireland's 32 show last
Friday to help us celebrate the end of the work week. Midway thru the
3rd set, the show featured its own miracle, when the Bobby Sands poster
on the ceiling above the stage mysteriously began to weep tears upon
Drew's person. The believers will note they must have been tears of
joy, as Drew was not electrocuted. Were they tears of sorrow, all bets
would've been off. Despite the Irish water torture, the joint was jumpin'
and we appreciate you sticking with us as we dodged the drops. Saturday's
Sequoia Nursery School benefit auction in the Oakland hills was a great
success, and the band was very well received. Even the babies were
dancing! Thanks to Kathy M. for shepherding us towards this worthy
cause. Saturday was also the first time we played the same songs the
Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan show on the anniversary of its broadcast.
A minor thrill, yet it felt sooo right. Next weekend has us back in
North Beach on Friday at Grant & Green, and amongst our good friends
at McGee's in Alameda on Saturday. See you there!
Sunday January 27, 2002
What a fabulous weekend! Friday's show at the Englander was jam packed
with friends and fans. The dancing was continuous, and the energy was
amazing. The staff at the Englander couldn't have been kinder, and
we look forward to playing there again. Saturday's show at McGee's
was also a raver, and the great response and kind comments from everyone
there were much appreciated. If you got one of our business cards that
were handed out at those shows, check the back of your card for our
first promotional tie-in. For all of next month (February - - month
of love, valentines, Cupid, mushy poems, etc.) your card gets you a
'buy one, get one free' special on Love Lattes at Spritzer's Cafe.
Spritzer's is Alameda's toniest coffee house cafe, at 734 Central Ave.
near Webster St. Treat your valentine to a Love Latte next month, on
us. February brings return Sun Kings engagements to Grant & Green
and Ireland's 32 in SF, and again at McGee's. Check the calendar for
details starting Feb. 1. Thank you all for your continued support.
We'll see you again next month.
Thursday January 16, 2002
Been awhile, hasn't it? Sometimes life gets in the way of all this
fun we're having. Last Saturday's show at McGee's was a raucously exciting
evening, combining Johnny Costello's surprise birthday bash with a
celebration from Alameda's contingent of 'Raider Nation'. Seems that
a lot of Raiders fans are also Beatles fans, and the team's playoff
win earlier that evening ensured that the festivities remained...well,
festive. Dedicating 'I'm A Loser' to the opposing team didn't hurt
either. A splendid time was had by all, and special thanks go to Carolyn
for leading the dance floor! We'll be back again next Saturday 1/26.
We'll see you there, and don't forget next Friday, at the Englander
in San Leandro. It's a spacious pub with a stage, so there should be
room for everybody.
Also, for those fans of our link to 'Today
in Beatles History', the database was retired by its creators
on January 7, 2002. For Beatles and history fans like us, we're sad
to see it go.
Saturday December 29, 2001
Once again we are reminded that all things must pass. After six months
of appearing weekly at the Minnow (and what a GREAT six months it has
been), we're taking a small break. Beginning with the new year, the
Minnow will go by the name of Rooster's Roadhouse. With the new management
and wet season coinciding, we'll take some time off while they're fixing
a hole where the rain gets in. Sadly, the hole is directly above the
stage. We'll also be taking this time to add a few more songs to our
set list, including more acoustic based numbers. January finds us performing
in the East Bay at San Leandro's Englander Pub on Fri. Jan 25, and
an Alameda evening at McGee's on Sat. Jan. 26. Tomorrow night we'll
be at Ireland's 32 in San Francisco. See you there!
Monday December 24, 2001
Here's wishing you all a joyous holiday from the Sun Kings. Last Fridays
show at Grant & Green was very well received, with a number of
our Alameda friends making the trek across the bay to join us. You're
the best! The stage is cozy enough to make us appreciate each others
efforts at personal hygiene, and on a chilly night the welcome from
the club and their patrons was warm indeed. Our final performance of
the year at the Minnow takes place Thursday. It's our 'get a jump on
Auld Lang Syne' show, and Sunday Dec. 30 is our last public show of
the year at Ireland's 32. Have a happy Christmas everybody!
Sunday December 16, 2001
The Toys for Tots benefit show was a great success, and we appreciate
all those who helped contribute to help make someone's holiday a bit
brighter. We had a great time and we heard from many of you in the
audience that the feeling was mutual. McGee's staff made us feel welcome
from the moment we walked in, and the response to the music from everybody
was, as they used to say, gear. A late December show has been added
at Ireland's 32 in San Francisco for Dec. 30, and again in early February.
Look for more venues next month and we'll see you SF city dwellers
this Friday at Grant & Green.
Friday November 30, 2001
It is with genuine sadness that the Sun Kings mourn the loss of George
Harrison, and with him, a little bit of ourselves. George was the 'favorite
Beatle' for 3 of the 5 of us. We hold a special fondness for George's
songs, and will be feeling them more than usual in the days ahead.
Our condolences go out to his family, Paul and Ringo, and the multitudes
of us whose lives are the richer for his presence. God speed George,
we'll miss you.
Wednesday November 28, 2001
Many thanks to all the faithful (you know who you are) for coming
out to our last Tuesday night show at the Minnow. The transition is
official, and next Thursday kicks off the first of our new weekly night
at the Minnow. Bein' so close to the weekend and all, you can stay
a little longer on Thursdays, and we've adjusted our start time accordingly.
Further down the road, we've got McGee's and Grant & Green next
month, and the Englander, a fine San Leandro pub on Fri. January 25,
2002. We wish you a joyous holiday season, and hope you'll find some
time to share with us. Aren't holidays better with Beatles music anyway?
Monday November 19, 2001
The Sun Kings 'Tuesdays at the Minnow' will be moving to Thursdays,
starting December 6. For all of you who have helped make Tuesdays 'Fab
Night' we're taking you two days closer to the weekend, and hope you'll
make the move with us. We've got some new venues booked in December,
including McGee's in Alameda Sat., 12/15, and Grant & Green in
SF Fri. 12/21. Look for more details when December rolls around. Until
then, we'll see you at the Minnow for the next two Tuesdays.
Saturday November 3, 2001
Happy Birthday, Michael!
We've got some new audio clips up on our music page, taken from the
last couple of Tuesday performances. We're adding new songs to the
show every week or so, and the band is sounding very comfortable with
each other. Some new show info for next month. We'll be appearing Saturday,
Dec. 15, at McGees in Alameda at their annual Toys for Tots benefit.
Look for the reopening soon of Croll's, a classic late 19th century
tavern on Webster Street, with some Sun Kings shows to follow.
Thursday November 1, 2001
It's a brand new month, and we're delighted to announce that our bookings
are now being handled by Renee Caraveo, allowing us to spend more time
on the music. Thanks Renee, and welcome aboard! You can reach her at
our email address. Her arrival coincides with the completion of our
long awaited promo package. The result? Look for more bay area venues
to appear on our calendar as we head into the new year. In other news,
our current steady, the Minnow has been purchased by new management.
Many changes are said to be in the works, including a new name for
the club. One thing that isn't changing is Tuesday nights with the
Sun Kings. We've seen lots of new faces in October, and we're grateful
for the positive word of mouth. Our Tuesday night reign has been extended
thru November, again thanks to our many friends, old and new. To answer
those of you who were asking this week, yes we'll be back at the Minnow
next Tuesday. See you there!
Wednesday October 17, 2001
More info is coming in regarding our October 26 show.
This one is for the night owls. Nearly 20 bands, with the Sun
Kings taking the stage after the midnight hour. This party is an annual
event for former pirate/current web voice Vulcan Radio. A telecast
of the event will be broadcast live over vulcanradio.com. Tickets to
this event are available for $15.00 both pre-show and at the door.
In true pirate fashion, the address of the party will not be revealed
until the date of the event on Vulcan's web site. Pretty spooky, eh?
If you're ready to kick off Halloween weekend with a night of musical
adventure in the heart of Oakland, this is the place!
Friday October 12, 2001
The site is sporting a new look that we hope you'll enjoy. We've posted
our current song list, and will be adding some new features as we (both
site and band) evolve. Some of these additions are requests from you,
our fans. We'll get them up here for you just as soon as we can. We
greatly appreciate your continuing support!
Monday October 1, 2001
Many thanks to all our friends who came to last Friday's funfest at
the Minnow. You make it all worthwhile. Once again, we'll be appearing
at the Minnow every Tuesday this month. You may also see some other
venues filling out our calendar, as word of mouth (and a little printed
promotional material) takes effect. More new songs (for us, anyway)
are in the works, as well as a way to request your favorites via this
web site. Stay tuned.
Thursday, September 20, 2001
Minnow Tuesdays are back! Due to popular demand, the Minnow has requested
the Sun Kings extend their run of Tuesday night performances through
October. Tuesdays have come alive in Alameda, and its due to the faithful
and the new faces that show up each week. Thank you very much, your
support means a lot! We wonder if we're in danger of becoming 'the
house band', and yet we can't help but feel a little like Sally Field
clutching her Oscar exclaiming "You like us, you really, really
like us" ...in a hometown kind of way, of course. So next week,
you can get a double shot of the Beatles experience with the Sun Kings
on Tuesday 9/25 and a lengthier set Friday 9/28 with some new fab songs.
See you there!
Thursday, September 13, 2001
What can we say that has not been better expressed elsewhere? We feel
the shock, pain and sadness that everyone else in this country is going
through. Out of grief and respect we canceled our Tuesday night performance,
as did most entertainment and sporting events scheduled throughout
the nation. We regret not being there for those that may have come
seeking solace or escape in the music, but on the night of September
11, it was simply beyond our capacity to provide. Our hearts go out
to the victims and their families, both far and near, who were directly
touched by this unparalleled tragedy. We take this time to find some
comfort in the blessings that remain, and to hold our loved ones dearly.
We wish you and yours the very best in these difficult days, and we
will soon be back to help spread the Beatles universal message of love
and joy. God knows we need it.
Monday, September 10, 2001
Happy Birthday, Raul!!
Tomorrow evening (9/11/01) marks our 'Farewell to Tuesdays' at the
Minnow in Alameda. We'd like to thank all our friends and fans for
helping it grow. We started there at the very end of June, playing
to a nearly empty house. Over the next two months, the audience got
larger and more enthusiastic and word of mouth was very positive. We'll
be back at the Minnow for a Friday performance on Sept. 28. Special
thanks to Bob David behind the mixing board, who has obviously listened
to the Beatle's music just as much as we have, and never fails to help
us sound our best.
